Mathquest
A brain-teasing math adventure where you are the hero.
Object of the Game
Find and count all equations that result in the given Equas from 13 to 24, when you calculate any three adjacent numbers in the square grid.
How to Play
- You are given a prefilled grid and a list of all Equas that can be found from 13 to 24.
- There’s always at least one equation that can be made to satisfy each result.
- As a hint, you will know the total number of equations that can be found.
- Use the work area to write down all equations you find.
- Numbers can be calculated in any combination, but keep in mind the mathematical order of operations as you calculate:
- First perform any calculations inside parentheses, if they exist.
- Next perform all multiplications and divisions
- Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions
- In this game, adjacent numbers are three numbers connected vertically, horizontally or in an “L” shape, as shown in the diagram below.
- Use only basic arithmetic functions: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division; and follow the order of operations when necessary.
Example
In this 2×2 grid, our task is to count Equas from 13 to 24. Also, we know that there is a total of 18 equations that can be found.
Solution:
Equa-13 (2): 6 + 3 + 4 = 13, 1 + 3 x 4 = 13
Equa-14 (1): 6 x 3 – 4 = 14
Equa-15 (2): (6 – 1) x 3 = 15, (1 + 4) x 3 = 15
Equa-16 (1): (3 + 1) x 4 = 16
Equa-17 (1): 6 x 3 – 1 = 17
Equa-18 (3): 6 x 3 : 1 = 18, 6 + 3 x 4 = 18, (4 – 1) x 6 = 18
Equa-19 (1): 1 + 6 x 3 = 19
Equa-20 (1): (6 – 1) x 4 = 20
Equa-21 (2): (6 + 1) x 3 = 21, 6 x 4 – 3 = 21
Equa-22 (1): 4 + 6 x 3 = 22
Equa-23 (1): 6 x 4 – 1 = 23
Equa-24 (2): (3 + 1) x 6 = 24, 6 x 4 : 1 = 24
As we can see, solution for this puzzle is correct.
